To start with, it's the battery. They are expensive, they have a
limited charge cycle life time. Bout the time one is selling the car,
the battery needs replacement to the tune of $10k plus. Next you have a
very limited infrastructure, you can charge them at home or an extremely
short list of communities in a few geographical areas. Then there is the
range(battery). Fine if you are commuting up to 100 miles, but not
something you would want to drive across the nation, nor into other
countries. Then there is the temperature affect (battery), I read about
many electrics being stranded in some bitter snow storms in the East.
charging takes time (battery) so if you need to travel a great distance,
you have to add in all the delays to recharge.
It's a no brainer, a car with very limited utility, high acquisition
cost and a necessarily narrow demographic of users. That spells an even
lower demand in the used market than new. Buying an electric is quit a
commitment.
Only a quantum leap in battery technology will make them at all
competitive. I wish it were otherwise, but it is what it is.
