This is the way to do a tilt rotor: http://bellv280.com/
The transmission pivots the rotor instead of the whole drivetrain. On a
small aircraft, the cross shaft would be driven and angle drives would
drive the rotors.  The rotor shafts would be hollow for control rods to the
rotors.  This has been done before, check this out:
