My company makes microphones, and we use a lot of expert CNC machining
done by shops within a few miles of here (Santa Cruz, California.) Shop
labor rates are expensive, and many shops have folded. But the survivors
are really good and work fast, so the parts are often cheaper in the
long run. There is a lot of competition because this is still where a
lot of medical appliances, tools, microwave parts etc. are made. One of
the shops we use also makes their own product, the "Twister" speed
lathe, and housings for this are sand cast locally with good quality. Do
not expect any engineering assistance -- drawings need to be exactly
right, but good work is available at reasonable prices, in our experience.
