Paul,

You don't need to entomb the whole thing in potting compound. Regular
wax or petroleum jelly works fine, leave the top 1/2" or so for a layer
of potting compound to seal it. If you don't tell them, people will
never know that only the top 1/2" is solid.

This was done for telephone stuff for decades.
