Subject: Rotary installed weight.

Ok. Y'all know I've removed the flying rotary from my Velocity. For
those who may be curios, I weighed my full rotary install today. I
removed the entire engine as one unit from the firewall, including
the Conversion Concepts engine mount, 13b turbo block (sans turbo),
stock exhaust, Mistral Intake, injectors, coils, remote oil filter,
two alternators (one stock, one smaller Kuboto mounted at the vacuum
pump bracket) hoses, oil cooler, radiators, oil, most of the coolant
(last about 1.5 quarts) RWS RD-B re-drive and IVO three blade in
 flight adjustable prop.

I wanted to weigh the entire things as a unit but it was too
cumbersome and was over my scales limit.

So, I weighed the PSRU and prop as on unit. The radiator and factory
oil cooler and attach brackets as a second unit and the engine,
mount, exhaust, intake et al as a third unit.

The engine tipped the scale just at 290 lbs The coolers (with one
medium fan) were 27 lbs The PSRU and prop were 78 lbs

 TOTAL 395 lbs.

Just some data I thought y'all might like.

PS, I have a pending sale with deposit on the PSRU and prob combo. I
may be wanting to sell the rest if I have serious interest (I become
too attached to stuff). I think the Mistral Intake may garner some
 mindful interest. Just FYI.

Would the Mistral intake work(fit) on a 2004 RX8? If so, how much?
 Gary Lucky

It probably won't fit an RX8. Last I heard they were out of biz.
Unfortunately they would not sell parts. A few people have them but
 that's it.

The Mistral intake fits the 2nd gen turbo [AKA 4 port] like a glove.

 Chris Barber

BTW there are two RX8 engines. Low power and high power. The low
power was not made for long.

 Paul Lamar

Paul, How does one know if they have a low or high power RX8 ?
 Chris.

Take the intake manifold off and count the intake holes. A high
power has six. The low power blocks the top two holes on the front
 and rear end housings.

If you p-port the engine it does not matter. For a pusher it is
best to use a turbo as a good muffler is hard to fit in a pusher.
Turbo's make great mufflers. A TO4 or equivalent is about right.

 Paul Lamar

 Chris,

What are you asking for the Mistral intake?

 Joe Graham

 Joe,

I'm asking what we paid for it. $2500. Any proceeds going to my
plane. Yep. That's an aviation price for a properly engineered piece
that addresses a need. I'm willing to sell but it's not a forced
 sale.

As Paul prefers, P-ports is an option, but for side ports I doubt you
 will find a better solution.

 Chris

There must be something wrong with my credibility :) Are there some
stupid people out there misunderstanding and bad mouthing me?

About the same time I was selling a custom cast 4 port intake
 manifold for about $200 : ) Got about 190 to 200 HP.

Why did you pay Mistral $2500 Chris? ROFLOL

And to think Mistral only good 200 HP total.

IF you hang on to it for another 50 years it may have historical
 value.

You must be bucks up Chris :)

 Paul Lamar

Yep, it was pricy. But for those who are completely uninitiated (or
who were) like me, it was a much valued option.....so to speak.

I was not the one to actually buy the intake. A buddy, who was once
very involved in my project did. Regrettably, medical issues, while not
life threatening, caused a loss of his medical and a loss of enthusiasm.

You have so much experience and resources at your disposal, you may
forget we mere mortals still can consider something you see as simple to
be quite daunting. A bolt on intake solution, that is well engineered
(200 hp notwithstanding) was greatly appreciated. My buddy and I quickly
concluded after a couple of massively failed attempts at homegrown
intakes, we would likely be saving time and money and have a far
superior product with the Mistral Intake. He had already spent hundreds
on bad results. So, we sucked it up. Also, IIRC, your parts were not
available at this specific time.....and even if they were, it was
outside our past knowledge set to use properly. Yes, the learning
 curve has been steep.

Even today, I would consider the Mistral Intake as an option. As is
often stated, the price is somewhat small compared to the cost to build
an airplane. The confidence it provided by knowing at least one
component was well done was helpful.

 FWIW.

 Chris

What year did he buy it? I made those parts in 2003.

Most of my Mistral pictures are 2004.

 Paul Lamar

I'm not certain. I want to say 2005 or 2006. I moved to my hangar in
late 2004 and it was after that.

BTW Our p-port video on youtube is up to 118,000 hits.
equal to 2 years sales of RX8's :)

Do you have a picture of the engine mount on your Velocity? I am trying to decide if I should use a rotary engine on a pusher sea plane project.

Merritt Jones

Here are some pictures I have of Chris's plane.
Hopefully he has some better ones.

The way to go on the motor mount is our new universals mount.
Much lower cost and easier to fab. Also a better design with
no tubes in bending.
