Hi,

I have not been able to find an input drive shaft from a manual
transmission for less than $500.

We can buy 4140 spline shafting for a few bucks a foot.

Have located a broacher to use an RX8 clutch plate drive center and
re-broacher it.

Prior to re-broaching the drive center must be annealed to RC 25.

But since we do not know the existing material, the question of the
day is how does one determine the material and heat treat necessary to
return the drive center to its present RC hardness after re-broaching
it? Please help!

Send 4130 or 4140 or 4340  out to a heat treater and ask for Rockwell 60.

Perhaps you can find input drive shafts in Wreckage/Recycling
centers from cars of
the 70's, for example some of the AMC models had 3 or 4 speed
manual gearboxes, and
so did the Corvairs, just probably looking for the gearbox of a car
engine with more power
output that the one you intend  having from your tuned Rotary
Combustion Engine would
yield some results, and prices for a complete gearbox start around $150.
RockAuto parts is a good purveyor of every kind of auto parts in
the USA. Good luck!
