Mr Paul Lamar
I was reading your article in rotaryeng .net and saw you had a
link to a news letter. I would like to subscribe if you are
still sending. I would also like to ask you a question on the
rotary engine we have installed in our aircraft. It is a six
port intake 2006 renisis motor. We modified the intake and the
exhaust to fit in the cowling which has resulted in a
significant loss in horse power. We did not put in a tuned
exhaust as you described. Could the three ports on each rotor
be connected to a single 2.5 inch pipe and a slide throttle
fabricated for each rotor as you did for the p-port system you
described in the paper you wrote, then attach two 18 to 22 2.5
inch pipes to the filter at the intake ? You are probably very
busy but if you could give some guidance it would be
appreciated.
Regards Keith A. Clayton
Send me some pictures of the engine and I can make some
suggestions for a better intake manifold. The HP of a rotary is
all about the intake system. What kind of airplane is it.

Assuming that you have a 2.85:1 gear box the intake runners
need to be about 18 inches long. That will give about 200 HP
at 7500 RPM or so. The rotary likes to rev. The smooth transitions
from oval ports to round tubes is important.
More on this in the next message
Longer if a 2.17:1 gear box. In the second case HP will
be 160 to 180.

Here are some suggestion. If you don't care for any of these
I can do others. Outer tubes are 2 inch OD and inner tubes
or 1 3/4 .065 wall in both cases.
The transitions are best done on an NC mill but could
be done with a die grinder.
To get 250 HP with a 2.85:1 GB you need to take it
apart and install p-ports. In a way it is less trouble
than 4 tubes with side ports and you get 50 HP
additional.

Clayton,
Are you a member of the Dyke Delta online group ? If not and you
would like to
join E mail me . There are two Delta's that have flown with the rotary
engine and
several more under construction . You appear to have a Tracy Crook
redrive (what
ratio ? 2.17 or 2.85 ?) and from the Maple Leaf on the tail would appear
to be in
Canada.

Got any recent pictures of your Delta Kelly?
