Hi Paul, you may have seen these units before, they can be used to attach flanges to shafts, and will transfer large amounts of power. They also work with or with out keys. The first is a shaft clamp used in the marine industry to attach a shaft to a drive with a female precision bore, no shafts keys or nuts, http://www.pythondrive.com/800/talen/eng/800%20eng.htm . the other is a situation I ran into 20 years ago on a Hitachi excavator, an older model where the harmonic drive between the diesel engine and the splitter box for the hydraulic pumps. Being around Twin Disc harmonic dampers in marine, I checked with a Twin Disc engineer and he supplied the aluminum flywheel ring and the cast steel/rubber block drive ring. I was told to use a Browning brand taper lock directly on the shaft. It was a splined shaft, but had enough shaft OD between spline to work properly. Never had a problem with it coming loose.
