Just general info;
IO 540 prop shaft, star gear input shaft, and 6 planet set at 14# before
lightening.
Auto trans Mazda and butchered 540 nose housing at 18#.

How did you get those holes through those hardened pins ? spark
erosion ? Do you know how long it took to do each hole ?

The shaft and the gearing weighed in at 14 pounds (#).
The flywheel housing and the butchered nose case weighed in at 18 pounds
(#), note weight on side of flywheel housing 18#.
Paul, that reminds me we are going to use the 60/45 needled roller
bearings you suggested, does it go under the thrust bearing to the
thrust shoulder on the shaft? Or vice/verses?

I did not observe the spark erosion, the technician said the most
difficult part was centering each pin before sparking. However the next
time we do one we will try drilling in the vertical mill with carbide,
but we anticipate that the pin will rotate and will have to take it to
the technician to be sparked.

I am not sure I follow you. I see no way of using needle bearings in the
recycle Lyc PSRU.
RL-PSRU if you like :)
It has to be an oil pressure fed thrust bearing just like the Lyc
aircraft engine.
I think you will also need a larger oil pump.

Thanks for your reply. Drilling the planet pins with a carbide drill
sounds do-able, I have a set of Bad Dog carbide drills that I bought at
Oshkosh, I might give it a try, at the moment I'm a bit "chicken". It
would seem to me that if the planet pin turns it should be able to be
pressed out as it would have broken the little pin that stops that
occurring. The planet pin can then be drilled out in the lathe, does
this sound feasible? I see in one of your photos a planet carrier on the
bench with the pins out, how did you do this Milo? Press them out,
smashing the retaining pins in the process? Or what?

I have not done it but somebody suggested the best way the get the blind
roll pins out is weld a short piece of welding rod to them.
And then pull them out. An Easy Out won't work. The roll pins are too hard.
Believe me we went round and round on this and decided the easy way was
EDM. If you do EDM impress upon the shop that does it to put the planet
carrier in a bucket of oil immediately (if not sooner) after it finished.
EDM does an excellent job of removing all traces of oil.
If you don't do this the shafts will rust in a matter of seconds.
EDM is done under water.
These planet shafts are worth their weight in gold as they are hardened
and ground for the needle bearings.
Worse comes to worse ship it to me Chris and I will get the same shop
that did mine do yours.

The end of the split pin is flush with the casting, measure the length
of the split pin, we know this length because we can see that on the
destroyed housing, drill a hole in the housing face just at the end of
the pin and force it forward enough to grab a hold of it. The small hole
may or may not affect the strength of the housing.

Thanks for the offer to get the planet carrier EDM over there. I
have found a shop locally here, we are in discussions as to difficulty
and price, can you recall how much it cost you to get it done ?
