Paul, when measuring runner length, where is the starting point for
this measurement? Is is the inside face of the rotor housing, the
start of the throttle body, or somewhere else?
Neil.
When a slide throttle is wide open it is the port to the bell mouth.
Unfortunately when a butterfly is used that modifies the tuning so it
becomes hard to say without dyno numbers.
All this is based on the LeMans engine which used a slide throttle.
I think you gave up on it too soon :)

BTW how's the gear box coming?
Any new hours on the Glastar?

Paul, Been away busy wearing my "disability hat". So to update you,
Looking
at your photo the 6" bend gives you 9 inches alone, then at a rough guess
the rest would seem to add up to somewhere near 20 inches total runner
length. Then comes the arguments that a proper bell mouth that tapers
from 2
3/4 inches down to the 2 inch runners will give a better effect. As you
say, all guess work without a Dyno. Then to complicate things I measured
the internals of a 2" aluminum pipe and it comes in at 47mm. A true 2" ID
would be near 51mm, so that in itself makes a restriction.
Then again the
throttle body tapers from 55mm to 50mm, which means that the intake runner
should be 2 1/4 inch to give the correct ID for the intake runner. Why am
I going back over all this again? Well I have to set up a test bed for the
new PSRU and to test the flex coupling simply as insurance for myself,
as it
becomes very quiet when that fan stops. I now have the motor back home and
was to build an engine package for an RV simply to sell when I was finished
with all testing. Then it hit me at the usual 2am scheming session. Why
not build a package for my Glastar as second time around it would be much
improved (I must have been dreaming!)
Then once I get it finalized I can
simply change it all over to my Glastar in a half day. So I can continue
flying UN-interrupted while doing all the test running and then swap it all
over. I am now also finding my heat exchangers are over the top in cooling
which is a good complaint. So am looking at down sizing these as well plus
a stream lined front that will look much more sexy, more like a shark???
(see I knew I should have tried to go back to sleep a bit harder!) So in
all this I have time to see how I can do it all much simpler which is
cheaper. That is why I am looking at runner lengths again and a simple
design that will be very compact, again cheaper. My original was very time
consuming.
Finally got all the problems out of the microtech ECU. I had a slight
"miss" at full power which I could not eliminate no matter what I did.
Rewired everything many times, changed everything electrical, sent the ECU
and igniter box back to find the fault ? but no effect. I spent possibly 4
months ringing all the world, changing every possible cause, and finally
the
last Mazda racing place in Australia said it is FUEL! So in total unbelief
and desperate I actually fiddled with the fuel supply as in injector time.
5 seconds later all was fixed! How could I have been that stupid? Have
over 50 hours on the Rotary now, and now comfortable to get the
restrictions
lifted so I can then tour the world. Still talking to Microtech to get the
old "mixture" knob replaced on the ECU plus a few more simple mods, which
Dominic is currently looking at. He did have a mixture knob originally but
never sold one so scrapped it.
PSRU, Still progressing, first step is to make the flex drive and see
if I can destroy it on the bench. Have to keep "encouraging" Maspro as
I am
way down their list of importance, but then I have an engine package to
build now as well, so not annoying them much. The first one is to see what
I have overlooked. Nothing another 20 years won't fix.
Still waiting on that Coil from you!! Neil.
Still working on it. Ran into a snag today. Since the two frequencies
are not derived from each other there is a phase problem.
The osc gate is breathing :) Sometimes I get 6 sparks and
sometimes only 3 sparks I am going to try a CD4046 phase lock
loop I have in stock. If that works at low RPM I will order the high
speed version.
74HC/HCT4046A.
If I can not get that to work I will give up on the hardware solution
and program a micro computer. Getting to be a lot of chips.
