Interesting Engines
Here's a 300cc and 600cc versions used for UAVs...FWIW

Interesting Engines. Notice that it also burns Jet fuel with a reduced
compression ratio. Wonder if it is possible to convert a Mazda rotary to
burn Jet fuel, even with a slightly reduced output.

Nice 3D's but until I see some actual results it is vapour ware IMHO.

A typically low compression ratio Wankel rotary engine can stand low
octane grade fuel but is not naturally suited to burn heavy fuel.
(the combustion temperature is too low and the amount of unburnt fuel in
exhaust is high)
IMHO, there is two possibly efficient ways to burn heavy fuel in a
Wankel rotary :
- First increase the temperature of fuel to inject it as a compressed
gaz when the poor air-fuel mixture compression is close to completion.
(Almost a diesel mode with poor air/ fuel mixture and still spark plug
ignition)
This would lead to a stratified charge and a hopefully more efficient
combustion.
- Second, increase the total compression ratio to a value equivalent to
a diesel engine.
This has been experienced by Rolls-Royce with two rotors of different
size, the larger one feeding the smaller one with compressed air and
completing the hot gas expansion back from the smaller one. The fuel was
injected at highest compression time for diesel type ignition.
More efficient way is to use turbo charging in turbo compound mode :
Higher compression as well as better thermal energy recovery.
But this means starting the engine on light fuel with spark plug
ignition, and when hot at high charge, switching progressively to turbo
compound diesel mode.
At the crossing of those two ways : Very high pressure Direct fuel
injection in a high pressure turbo compounded Wankel... On either light
or heavy fuel when hot.
