Paul,
As you know, I am converting my RV-4 to Lycoming power, but I am keeping
my rotary FWF installation, perhaps to put on a future airplane. After
the conversion, I'd like to P-port my current Gen 3 rotary- I have
access to all the welding and machining that I need to do it myself. A
few questions- on some years the o-ring grooves are on the end housings,
and on some they are on the rotor housings. I forgot which is the
configuration on my engine. The RX-8 engines have the grooves where? On
the rotor or end housings? My reason for asking is this- would it be
better to use the RX-8 rotor housings with the side exhausts, or the
peripheral exhausts as it is now configured? I'd like the P-port power,
but with the lower exhaust temps of the side exhaust. If I recall
correctly, the o-ring grooves for my engine are on the iron side housings.

On your engine they are on the end housings.
You would need a complete RX8 engine to get the side exhaust.
If you want it as reliable as the Lycoming you need to use an aircraft
carb and a pair of
aircraft mags. No EFI or electronic ignition. Electronic ignition fails
when the electrical
system fails. Unless of course you use the outboard motor style ignition.
