 In the process of installing the Lamar Instruments Inc. high speed
 multi-spark ignition on the RV4. I rethought the optical trigger.

 I used two pick ups and a bearing on the end of the e-shaft
 on the first design. The idea was to keep the disk with the holes
 in it precisely aligned with the optical pickups. It was rather expensive
 to make as well

 That was not robust enough on the RX7 road racing car we tested
 it on. It failed mechanically. It looked like a good idea at the time :)

 This design is more typical of the reluctance sensor mounting on
 the stock 3rd gen RX7 and the RX8. If you have a second
 gen CAS you can do away with it and use the hole for a dip stick
 and or engine oil filler.

 There are two optical pick ups in one housing and it can be mounted with
 a simple strut up from a bracket on the oil pan bolts.  The trigger
 holes for the rear
 rotor are displaced radially. All Mazda rotaries have oil pan bolts in
 roughly
 the same place.

The cartoons of the new ignition mounting look like they may be a simple installation on an aircraft; but will require a little more skill and daring to get mounted on a car, with obstructions like the steering rack and front crossmember trying to get in the way.  I look forward to attempting to mount one and try it out.

I'll send you another "cartoon" on how to do it in a few hours :-)

Basically you bend up a piece of .090 soft aluminium about
3 inches wide.


It will look something like this sketch.

Clamp it in the vise between 2 one inch square steel bars
and hammer it to shape.

You can take T6 aluminium and cook it at 500 degrees
F in the kitchen oven for a couple of hours  and that will soften it
and make it easy to bend.
