Paul.   Is the casting for a RX8 thermostat diecast or cast aluminium??.
 Just worried that it may be diecast and unweldable.

I don't think that is the case. The rotor housings are diecast
and people weld on them all the time.

I am sure the RX8 water pump and thermostat housings are
diecast.

In theory it is better to control the air supply to the heat exchangers
as that lowers the cooling drag.  Dr. Porsche knew that when he
designed the old air cooled VW :)

Those louvres under your rad should work fine to control the
engine temperature as long as they don't leak too much.
Same as cowl flaps on air cooled engines.

Paul,  Thanks for the info on the housings,.  The louvers, In theory they
were great, but difficult to get to seal completely. I just could not get
the engine hot enough with the louvres closed .  In a temper I put a
thermostat in and all good and  lot less work.  Now awaiting my new heat
exchangers for the engine with a completely different cowl (pointy nose) and
have pinched Dave Leonard's idea of having the heat exhaust onto the bottom
of the engine  before exiting the cowl.  Many reasons for all this, but it
is along the keep it simple track.  Finally today I am hoping to actually do
work on the project.
