On YouTube there is a video about a guy's inventive ideas on Wankel engine.
I think the name is Ernie Brink. He claims to be able to reduce
exhaust temperature by 600 degrees.
The first idea was to narrow the gap left for the spark plug so that
there is no leak across the seal at the apex, which I think makes
sense. The second idea was to have offset combustion chamber so that
expansion of gas pushes the rotor forwards only and not backwards at the
top dead position. I think this does not make any sense at all as the
entire combustion chamber actually has uniform pressure, whether or not
offset.
Is my understanding correct?

First the gas mileage is no where near as bad as he says it is.
My RX8 gets 25 MPG on the highway. If I use max acceleration around town
the mileage drops as would any 250 HP car. Very similar to a Corvette.
Basically he has not read all the technical literature available for the
Wankel.

Down load Kenichi Yamamoto's books. They are a compilation of most of
what Mazda learned.
If he had he would have known that there is near zero pressure
difference from the trailing volume to the leading volume at the spark
plug hole.
Therefore no gas flow across the spark plug hole.
After combustion takes place the pressure in the expansion chamber is
near uniform. The centre of this pressure is in the right place to spin
the e-shaft.
His reduction in EGT is highly unlikely.
His video has been around for years. If any of it worked we would have
heard more about it
