I have been doing it off and on since the early 70's starting with tape and mylar.

Good thing I only populated it partially and tested it with a current limited
power supply! If I had connected it to a 12 volt car battery
  it would have melted the PC board and burned down the hangar!!

Not just you. I had a pro layout a pcb the size and shape of a half dollar coin.
All smt components. He got 2 IC's swapped. I recently laid out a 4"x6" pcb; mostly smt.
I got a 4 pin IC backwards. Murphy's law always applies.

When I work on stuff like this I always apply Sullivans Law which states that Murphy was an optimist.
