It is kind of strange for Mazda to have the oil pump on the front of the
engine and feed the oil into the back of the engine. This started in
1968 and is the same to this date. It complicates the external oil
filter plumbing. Jim Medere modified this system so oil is fed in at the
back AND the front of the TTC engine.

Hi paul,
I am sure you will have thought of it, but would using antifreeze in the
total loss water to cool the time to climb engine and dropping the water
temp to just above its freezing level give you a worthwhile cooling gain?

We have been told by Jim Medere our warranty is void if we let it get
above 180F :-) He also told us not to use total loss. We considered it.
That was our first  guess because it would not need that much cold water.

By total loss I was referring to a tank of water that could be sprayed
over the heat exchanger to increase heat transfer, this would be in
addition to the air cooling system. There would be a disadvantage in the
weight factor of the tank, but would this be negated by the extra
cooling and possible increase in HP that could be produced?

 As I understand we are only looking for a short cooling period, The
rate of heat transfer through copper is far higher than aluminium, heat
exchangers used to be made from copper: Again there is a trade off with
the weight of copper heat exchangers. Depending on the grades, copper is
about 3 times the SG of aluminium. Given the fairly low overall weight
of the heat exchanger would copper be an option?

Does anybody even make copper cores today?
The efficiency of an air cooled heat exchanger if we were to spray water
on it, that is going to be used in part as an air water system, for a
better word could be vastly improved by modifying the cooling fins
pressed onto the tubes. Most heat exchangers are built to a price rather
than an engineering optimum.

Yes we are doing that. We have a mandatory 100 psi pump to pump water
into the intake
manifold and some will be sprayed on the cross counter flow heat exchanger
as needed. I have not seen copper cores in years.

Paul,Actually consider using  50% water/meth. It would be a better mixture for detonation control... especially with high intake temps.See attached,

Apparently detonation is not a problem.
Spark plug cooling is.
