I broke out my old HP2000 laptop I had loaded Ubuntu on back in 2013.
So I did a lot of updates, got code blocks installed to do C++ on,
and a few other Linux IDE's to play with.
Now on the BBB I have to come up with some hardware to plug in the
headers that will give me my I/O ports and a clock function. It is
running Debian so I figured should be able not only to run the ecu
program but also a touch tft screen to see current engine parameters.
Depending on the actual processing power of the BBB maybe even the
efis. Graphics are good and fast enough.
The maximite does have the I/O ports already, clock, but the graphics
will be crude. I think the maximite will a good start will not be
able to run the ecu and display the instruments to monitor the
engine's operation. Lots of file swapping and linking due to the
memory restrictions.
I think the BBB is the best option so far, fast processor, lots of
memory too. I am not very familiar with Linux systems but I can
program in c or c++.
So my first question I have is it possible to write the program in c
that can be loaded in to the BBB and set up linux so that when it is
powered up it will automatically start to run the ECU program and
the instrument program automatically every time it is reset or
powered up?

You got me there. I have been using it for 16 years but I have done
no C programming with it. Back in the old days under DOS a special
file with the name autoexec.bat would run first and execute some set
up programs.
It will probably be written in the script language. If you put this
in google you get a lot of info on on start up scripts..

Here is a handy guide on writing scripts. Very BASIC like :-)

: yeah, I remember the autoexec.bat files for dos, I did write in
mbasic, the original basic and the dos 1.0 that came with my first
8088 IBM-xt, that was a whole lot of money back then too for a
computer.
oh i found a tft version of the maximite the geoff and a german guy
kit'ed. I am trying to get one, there are some videos of it on
youtube running graphics, not bad.

Here are some tricks while in the terminal I learned over the years.
"locate" [key word your are looking for]
"locate" is lightening fast bordering on instantaneous. My files are
500 gig.
If you have modified the file system recently you have to do this
first:
"sudo updatedb" or locate may not find what you are looking for
Changing directories: when doing "cd" first do "ls" and use the
mouse to outline the directory you want to go to. Then merely paste
it after "cd" with the middle mouse button. Hit enter.
That takes a lot of pain out of changing directories while in the
terminal.
If you see a c program or script in a pdf use the mouse to select it
than paste it into a text editor. Then rename it, save it and you
are ready to compile it or use it as script.
To make a pdf out of a web site. Use the mouse to select what you
want to save and paste it into open office write. Then save it as as
pdf.

it applications out there, many for free.

MS Windows may even have it built in now. It's on my computer at work
but IT set it up so I don't know if it was included or added.

I assume those are windows programs. I went into Fry's and inquired
about some windows programs for sale and I asked them if it was
necessary to connect my windows computer to the internet for the
program to work. They said yes. All of them.
Microsoft and these windows software venders are the NSA of the
computer world ;-)
One must be insane to connect one's windows computer to the
internet. Running Linux for 16 years I have never had a virus.
All Linux programs are free for a couple of mouse clicks. About
50,000 at last count. There are still one or two programs I keep a
Windows computer to run.

I don't even have a computer at home, so Linux/MS/viruses/etc. are not
even a concern for me. I use my desktops and laptops at work and as I
wrote it is set up/maintained by our IT department and except for
specifying engineering specific software and hardware I have (too)
little say in such matters. All MS based. Don't get me started on that
or my IT department.
Is there is an analogous screen capture program for Linux as it is a
very simple program?
