There may have been a paradigm shift on air cooling of the rotary.

They seem to be using that graphite foam in conjunction with water
filled copper tubes to distribute the heat load around the housing.
It drops the temp delta "even with air cooling. The maximum temperature
drop was substantial, from 231°C to 129°C. The temperature difference
(measure of temperature uniformity) decreased by 8.8 times
(from 159°C to 18°C) for a typical UAV engine."

They are off on the rotor temperature distribution however this might
work for 2 rotor air cooled wankels that need to cool the centre
housing.

Most air cooled single rotor engines work fine as long
as the oil is cooled. The rotor bearing temperature
is a big issue.

Heat pipes are common in cooling some older
high speed CPU's in desktop computers.

The same heat pipe principle is used in sodium
cooled exhaust valves in all lycoming engines.

Also in real high power engines like the 650HP time to climb
engine the lower spark plug area needs additional cooling.
