I'm not an engineer but you and others on the newsletter list might
find an article in this month's Sport Aviation worth reading. It
deals with a newer approach to detecting defects through vibration
analysis. It could be useful for the TTC project since so much of
what you are using are 'one-off' pieces.

The company it covers is a Latvian startup called Advanced Vector
Analysis (AVA) and their approach is apparently so effective it
reduces the number of sensors required significantly. They measure
the normal x-, y- and z- axes but add a fourth dimension, i.ie.
tracking vibration over time. I'm assuming you can track down the
academic research publications documenting the processes and results.

Very helpful to see what`s going inside a machine without to look
inside ;-) You will be alerted many time before failure occurs.
Most of windmill-gearboxes are monitored by online-sentinel-tools,
alarms come via mobile phone. Also heavy industry equipment, ships,
drills also.
