The Formula One engine cost up to 100 million dollars and is 1.5
times the 200 pound weight of our TTC engine.

Hi Paul, do you have an article on the buildup of your 200 lb engine?
When I left the newsletter a few years back, Racing Beat were still
developing the aluminum engine plates, a check of their website still
does not list them. I would like to keep the weight down on the RX8
engine, where can I get al engine plates?
I use a Rotec TBI on the Funk with good results; and two 48mm TBIs on
the RX8 would be a good bet - slide throttles are part of the TBIs.
I really enjoyed working with Don D on the RX engines, especially the
coolant pump tests; I miss him still, and those pics brought back

I have this one but it does not talk much about the engine building process.
Basically the engine is stock with only minor mods here and there. The oil
pan is done away with and a scavenge pump is used tocollect oil drain back
from the rotors and main bearings.
I sprint car water pump is used instead of a Mazda water pump.
"This time Jim was able to extract 650 HP running on alcohol. Jim also
developed aluminium end housings that dropped the engine weight from about
300 pounds to 200 pounds. The Mazda 13B block is a sandwich of 5 castings.
It is held to together with 17 long bolts.
The front, middle and rear are cast iron in the production engine. Jim
designed and had cast aluminium housing to replace the three cast iron
housings.
Lots of other engine changes were made. A dry sump oil system was needed so
the oil pan was done away with and replaced with AN pluming that extracted
oil directly from the center and front end housings and send it to the oil
cooler. A new larger capacity water pump was needed. A p-ported was chosen
in instead of the stock side ports.
A Motec after market EFI system was chosen to supply fuel to the engine.
That came with an EFIS. The rotors are modified stock rotors as is the
eccentric shaft."

Hi Paul,
I was looking at the engine and I noticed that it has got side as
well as peripheral ports, why is this ?

The side ports are blocked off. Those end housings where designed years
ago when people thought low RPM torque was necessary. They were wrong :-)
HP is king. You can get all the low RPM torque you need with gears.
