If you know of anybody into 4 wheel drive and they happen to have a
 Chrysler Rock Trac 4.1 transfer case apart I need a cell phone
 picture of just the planet carrier.

 I have tried just about everybody and every thing here in SoCal. No
 luck so far. Some of the catalogue pictures are wrong like this one.
 Apparently Chrysler uses generic part pictures and not actual part
 pictures.

 Lots of data about the older New Process 241J and the current
 NVG241OR (as used in Rubicons) which have 4:1.

 There is also a conversion kit that replaces the front half of the
 case with a 5 pinion 4:1 set

 SO that's how they do it!!!!

 EXACTLY what I was looking for.

 Now I got to go see how big it is.

 It looks perfect. It even has a prop shaft spline. Essentially
 double planetary's but lighter in weight than two separate
 planetary's.

 I don't see the ring gears so they must be built into the housing.
 No problem.... we will just cut away what we don't need.

 On the regular 241 the ring gear is press fit then held in with a
 big snap ring, if you heat the case it'll come out.  I've never
 actually seen a Rock Trac, I didn't know it had a special planetary
 like that, interesting.  It seems like torque capacity would only be
 about half?

 That is good to know Everett. I was worried about it. Is there just
 one ring gear or two? Some are six pinion and some are four.
 Hopefully it is six.

The unit uses compound planetary gears.  There is one ring gear and one sun
gear. The sun gear drives the larger planet gear. The two sets of teeth on
the planet gear rotate together. The smaller gear drives against the ring
gear causing the carrier to rotate. This gives the extra reduction without
an extra while planetary gearset. If machining your own planet carrier, two
sets of planets could be installed back to back with the ring gear in the
center. Double the torque capacity.
