This is the first of 3 sets of pictures Pictures 1 to 7 are the rounded
edge on the Si3N4 apex seals These were run in the #87 Lemans Mazda Race
car owned by John Davis

This was used in a race and I suspect that it was not used for a long
period before they were removed possibly only a few hours (I don't know
the actual run time for a fact but I can try to confirm is that is
important, if I can track down the mechanic that removed them)

John is co-owner of Club Auto Sport in San Jose and that's where the #87
is stored. #88 Mazda is owned by Ralph Borelli (the other co-owner of
Club Auto Sport). Basically both cars are stored on opposite corners of
the same building.

Then I cleaned the soot or whatever the black residue is on the side
with scotchbrite and alcohol and too the side pictures 9 to 13 (the
scale on some of the pictures is in mm)

Last two pictures are the bottom edge of the apex seal
The surface appears to be pretty good and not much different than the
leading edge surface quality which makes me suspect the seal was not
used for more than a couple of races. Clearly Silicon Nitride is pretty
hard stuff and long wearing but the surface on the leading edge seems
barely polished

If you send me a new and used metal apex seal,I can get some pictures of
both to send you It would be especially useful if we have used seals
with a good estimate of the length of use in miles to compare
