I will still have to move the firewall back inside the Glasair
fuselage
about 5 inches to clear the turbo, I might as well go for ten. It
makes
it stronger and it can be tied to the spar.
The new Allison gear box is no longer than the Mazda starter :-)
Other than that it looks like I can get everything under the Glasair
cowl
including the cooling system.
Quite remarkable for a 1300 HP aircraft engine. Anybody for a poor
man's
P51.

With turbo compound you should be able to pick up 300 HP for
"free". That would require a Merlin or large round engine to compete
on a power basis. Weight would kill it. What engine has allowed the
Glass air to run 400MPH? From what I see, the admitted power from a
tweaky TSIO 550 is 650 to 750. The 26B easily doubles that. What
modifications to stiffen the airframe and to prevent flutter
considering you could be approaching 400MPH with that under the
cowl?

Dale, Paul, the fast Glasair is running an 8 cylinder Lycoming. I
forget the number but
there can't be a lot of them.
Bill Jepson
If so it is a Lycoming IO 720. Of course that is 720 cubic inches
and it make makes sense.
from every point of view except cost and survivability. The
crankshaft alone is rumored to be
$50,000 alone. You must be a multi millionaire to run one of these.
- IO-720-D1C fuel-injected, 722 cubic inches (11.8 litres),
400 hp (298 kW) certified 15 April 1982[
Getting 800 HP out of it direct drive is pushing it structurally it
to say the least. That is well over one HP per cubic inch. And not
for long. Now if they added a gear box they could run it up to 3600
RPM and
that would be a different story.
The four rotor would be only 7.8 L or 482 cubic inches. They got us
beat there but we
all know two or three HP per cubic inch is no problem for a Mazda
rotary. The TTC engine is putting
out 2.7 HP per cubic inch. 1300 HP is the same stress on a 4 rotor
except for the last
part of the e-shaft.
I am working on that as we speak. Mad Mike the drifter is getting
about
1000 HP. Lets say it is 1300 HP at 8000 RPM. That is 853 foot pounds
of torque.
I think that is doable. The Allison TX based GB ought to handle that
fine as a 400 HP TT truck
puts out 1300 ft pounds and drags 50,000 pounds.
