Are there any simple cheap off the shelf solutions for intercoolers? Is an intercooler even necessary if the turbo is only used for turbo normalizing? It seems that the only suitable area for an intercooler is on the hot side of the engine. How do you deal with the heat if the intercooler is mounted so close to the exhaust?

Google intercooler and also check ebay. Things change daily world wide.

As one goes higher in altitude the compressor ratio must increase to maintain
atmospheric pressure. This implies more heat in the intake air.

Sea level is 0.0766 pounds per cubic foot.
10,000 feet it is only 0.0565.

Intake air temperature at sea level of 175 F will increase to 250 F at 15,000
feet. That can cause preignition. It is advisable to use an intercooler.

Obtain a copy of Hugh Macinnes book
Turbochargers. There is a good chapter on turbo charging aircraft engines.

On the TTC we use water injection to lower the intake air temperature to 150 F
from 200 F at sea level. Not practical for cross country.

On the Reno racer the intercooler diffuser is between the hot exhaust
and the intercooler. It is the green thing in this 3D. Thin SS and insulation
fabric can be applied to improve the over all insulation.
