I worked at a local place that sold RV trailers, installed truck
 accessories and rented utility trailers. I argued with him numerous
 times about inspecting trailers when they came back from rental to
 ensure they were good to go next time. He wanted to not put out the
 money until he knew he would have income from it. Once he took a
 week off and we went through the trailers. The next bunch of rentals
 went well as just hook up and verify lights. One vehicle the truck
 wiring was screwed up. Anyway that business may go broke over the
 winter due to passing off too many customers.

Not sure if this applies to your stuck in park problem, but I have seen
on several different makes of vehicle the inability to get out of park
because the driver rarely set the parking brake which left the vehicles
weight on the pin that locks the transmission in park. Eventually the
hole gets elongated or ovalized and begins to stick. I've seen some
where if you rocked the vehicle while someone tried to shift you could
get it out and others that required a tow truck to pull the weight off
the pin. It's generally more difficult if the vehicle is on a slope.

This green lever supposedly gets you into reverse.

It could be the safety solenoid has gone bad or the switch on the brake has gone bad that triggers the solenoid to unlock the gear shift.
