Racing Beat did a real crappy job of installing the fuel injectors.
Kind of strange as they ignored everything we did over the past 18
years to address this issue. Actually they ignored everything we ever
did :-)
RB was using the Mickey Mouse Paul Yaw injectors with filters which
have their draw backs as well.
We nearly lost the TTC airplane not to mention Dan on Thursday to a
possible massive fire when we were running it up. Safety wire was
used to hold the injectors in alignment with the Paul Yaw filters and
the mechanic left it off. Probably did not think it was necessary.
The injector popped out of alignment with the Paul Yaw filters and
sprayed raw Menthol all over the engine. I ran over and pounded on
the canopy to get Dan to shut it off. Partly my fault for not
noticing the missing safety wire.
The proper way to do it is put all the injectors in a line and use a
fuel rail. The fuel rail is key to holding it all together.

I do agree that the injector mounting is not rite. But!! I do not
agree that the Paul yaw injectors are micky mouse. If the injectors
where mounted in the correct fashion. There never would have been a
problem.

It is totally unnecessary to have a cheap anodized extension on each
and every injectors that does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING except make it
prone to fail. It is a marketing ploy to make the injectors look
different than the ordinary mass produced STOCK Bosch injectors
witch they are. People will think they are something special and pay
twice as much money. I am not fooled :-). It is a scam pure and
simple.
As you can see from these pictures there is absolutely nothing in
the purple extensions but air :-)
The drawback is yet another O ring joint and a Mikey Mouse steel clip
to hold them together. Just something else to cause problems. That is
exactly what failed in our case nearly burning the aircraft to. the
ground and possibly killing Dan.
I have known about Paul Yaw for at least 18 years. Here is Mazda 13B
engine he built years ago. The Canadian sea plane purchaser was
very disappointed in the HP because it was not a p-port. It was a cut
down side port stock manifold. Basically the same basic parts RB got
650 HP out of with a p-port :-) Believe me, the purchaser would
have been quite happy if had as little as 300 HP.
I don't think it even had a gear box. It does not look like it.

Paul, Did the alcohol/oil mix actually ignite and did you have to
use extinguisher to put it out ??............

Alcohol fires can be put out with a garden hose or pail of water. I have
been told that you get an itchy feeling when burned by an alcohol fire.
Got training as corner marshal at the old Edmonton International
Speedway. Marshaled corner 1 for CanAm, TransAm, Formula Atlantic. The
year Porsche got the 917 30K was hilarious. Jody Sheckter practiced with
a 5.0L engine. Penske/Donahue had the 5.4L. Saturday night the German
mechanics were changing the engine out for the 5.4L. Walking through the
pits they had the engine almost out and hanging on the hoist at about 30
degree angle and it was stuck on something. Typical race car tight fit.
They would talk in German and swear in English.
The American Indycar Series came to Calgary's Race City a few years.
They buy older Champ cars and put AL block small block Chevy or Ford
engines in that are much less expensive. Some Buick V6 engines. They ran
alcohol. They liked coming to Calgary because the track was right on the
outskirts and you could see the Rocky Mountains. Banff only about 1 hour
away. Could not get road racing enthusiasm up there. Oval and drag was
all they could understand outside bull riding.

Great info Dale thanks. We have a garden hose nearby and the next time
we run it I will make sure it is on with a pistol grip valve at the ready.
We want to keep Dan alive.
Here is what the injector fix looks like.
Those clips must have clearance around them because something as
simple as connecting the wiring can dislodge the clips.
This is definitely belt and suspenders.
I spent two days working on this solution.
