Wrong Authors.  860616 looks like an SAE number.

This one is a NASA paper.

The problem with coatings is they tend to come off.

Now if we had a solid silicon nitride rotor that would really be
something :-)

Silicon oxynitrate die-cast will work as a rotor face if held in a 2
piece hub. Some newer options are alloyed with metals to subdue the
brittleness. Not cost effective yet. Also can be bought as plate
stock, works as inserts in the side housings held in carbon fiber.

Under heat the carbon shrinks almost none and the si is very stable.
I expect it will hold together nicely. We shall see...

3D printed ceramic latice.May not be keeping heat in but it sure
tells it where its not to go. Serious air cooling. The printers are
now under well $1000. And desk top size.

How long would it take to 3D print a Mazda rotor out of this stuff?

What would be the tribology situation  between this stuff and the
silicon nitride seals apex seals ?

What are the mechanical properties at 700 F ?

That is good sign Steve :-)

Maybe a silicon carbide rotor is not out of the question. Hughes
Research Labs are in my neck of the woods.

I'll see if I can find more information.

How about this approach for rotor manufacture?  It's pretty well proven in
turbochargers.
