     Enclosed there is an old patent by Mazda, related to Al side
     housings with some test results. But today there are a lot of
     different / better solutions for hardening / coating ...

     By the way, AVL (Austria) has suggested "PEO" - shall be very hard +
     resistant ... Again a "Plasma wonder" ... ;-)

   Here is a firm in the US offering that service. I wonder if it would work for side plates and the trochoide? Do you have any experience? Has it been tried?

   There is also General Magnaplate in NJ that offer hard anodizing coating with Teflon impregnation for low friction. For AL the coating is 'Tufram'. Best is 6061 because of lower silicon content. I have no clue if it would be useful for side plates or the trochoide. The data would suggest yes.  However, they chickened out when I asked, saying it will not work.

   Paul I'm sure you know this, that "hard" anodizing is nowhere near hard, or tough enough to provide side housing protection.  The Teflon impregnation helps the aluminum keep from oxidizing, but is NOT tough or resistant to impact. I have used tons of this stuff in the semiconductor cleaning equipment I have built in the past. It can be cut easily with simple high speed steel tools. The Detonation Gun coatings need to be diamond ground. Also they have a tenacious bond to the base aluminum.  There are sputtering processes now producing a diamond like coating which might show promise. Otherwise the det gun is "IT". I have spoken to several people at General Magnaplate. None of them thought they had a coating that would hold up. On aluminum anyway.

   What I think will work the best is a sheet of hard chrome plated steel. The question is how
   thick.  ..090" or .125" thick.
