I think what started all this was software patents on codecs in the US.
I know near nothing about it. Some countries did not recognize them and
programs like VLC came from Europe as well as Linux that would play
anything.
My Linux has no problem showing anything.
It appears there is video chaos in the cell phone and tablet biz.
If anybody has a cell phone or tablet that runs them with out problems
send me name of the app.

I think all you guys should switch to Linux Mint.
It has 68,000 free programs and the one I use a lot is called One Shot
and it is a video editor.
I have not found a video that it would not edit.
I am exporting mp4 as that is the most common format.
There will always a few minor bugs in any program.
One Shot can export a whole raft of video formats.
Linux runs all the Windows Office stuff with a free clone called open
office.
It can run Thunderbird email program which is file compatible since the
days when it was called Netscape on MS Dos something like 25 years ago.
I have all emails since the birth of this news letter.
I have not found any emails apps for tablets or cell phones anywhere
near the capability of Thunderbird.
It runs the FireFox browser.
Great Browser.
If your window's computer hard drive fails you may have to pay Microsoft
for another OS. Of course you have to pay for upgrades. Sometime the OS
up grades is worse than the old OS. I am still using windows 7 and XT on
two old note books. I run Rhino on one and use the other for scanning so
my main computer can do something else while the old computer scans.I
would not touch Windows 10 with a 10 foot pole :-)
Linux is free for downloading or in Linux magazine DVD's.
It can be installed from a thumb drive, a DVD or even over a network.
Work Space Switcher is a utility that allows you to have 32 separate
windows open at the same time. They are represented by 32 small boxes at
the bottom of the screen in 2 rows of 16.
You select instantly which one you want by clicking on its little box.
This an extremely powerful feature. I could not do this news letter with
out it.
I have been using computers since the days the Apple II was only
available as a motherboard. I used to build PC clones with Chinese
parts. I also sold Unix before Linus Torvolds invented Linux. MS Dos was
a subset of Unix.
I still use a very powerful clone of Wordstar called joe. Joe puts to
shame any other key board based editor and does some things better than
any other editor available.
It runs on Linux in the command line. Is free.
Speaking of the command line the Linux command "locate"
search engine can find any keyword in any file in a 500 gig file
structure in less than a second.
I keep locate in a screen all its own. Same for joe.
In 25 years I have never had a virus. Maybe a hack or two.
The OS is compressed on the hard drive and when it comes up it
decompresses I think that is how it works. If that is the case it
extremely hard for a hacker to modify Linux on the hard drive. If you
reboot you are back when it was installed.
Since it is open source millions of programmers are looking at all the
source code all the time. A rare bug is fixed in hours.
