Hi Paul,
The run out on my lathe is pretty good. Some years ago I put a new
chuck face on as the old one was worn out (it used to be a production
lathe judging by the capstan that came with it). I centred the new face
(Chinese) on the back plate and then made up a steel ring 2" in dia,
clamped it at the back of the jaws and used a dye grinder clamped to the
tool post and ground the jaws true. I then moved the ring to the front
and did the back of the jaws. It all came out pretty true. If I ever
need to remove something that needs to go back in I always mark the #1
jaw and the workpiece first (old habits die hard).
How did you drill the ring gear and how deep ? when I try to drill it the ring actually distorts somewhat !!! did yours ?
Cheers
Chris Hoskins.
How much distortion?
How are you holding it. What size drill did you use.
Go no deeper than .20 inch and square up the bottom of
the hole with a carbide end mill.
