Hello Paul, Steve Carlisle, Dragan Ristic et al,
the P+W Rotary Engine may be based more or less on the layout /
technology developed by
C-W + John Deere ...
The patents filed last year by P+W are dealing with aircraft themes - so I
guess that their [rotary] engines may be "ready to use" ... (?)
Here's a long list of the [P&W rotary] patents filed in 2016 ...
All filed on 2016-08-04 ...
Wo2017024394
Engine assembly with combined engine + cooling exhaust (for APU)
Wo2017024393
Turboprop engine assembly with combined engine + cooling exhaust
(see enclosed file)
Wo2017024392
Aircraft heating assembly with liquid cooled internal combustion engine +
heating element using waste heat
Wo2017024391
Auxiliary power unit with variable speed ratio
Wo2017024390
Auxiliary power unit with combined cooling of generator
Wo2017024389
Auxiliary power unit with electrically driven compressor
Now the ones filed 2016-06-20 ...
Wo2016205934
Compound engine assembly with direct drive of generator
Wo2016205933
Auxiliary power unit with excess air recovery
Wo2016205932
Auxiliary power unit with intercooler
Wo2016205931
Compound engine assembly with bleed air
And patents filed on 2016-02-19 ...
Wo2016131156
Compound engine assembly with modulated flow
Wo2016131155
Compound engine assembly with inlet lip anti-icing
Wo2016131154
Compound engine assembly with confined fire zone
Wo2016131153
Compound engine assembly with offset turbine shaft, engine shaft + inlet
duct
Wo2016131151
Compound engine assembly with common inlet
Wo2016131150
Engine intake assembly with selector valve
Wo2016131149
Compound engine assembly with coaxial compressor + offset turbine section
Wo2016131148
Compound engine assembly with mount cage
Wo2016131144
Engine assembly with modular compressor + turbine
Wo2016131143
Compound engine assembly with cantilevered compressor + turbine
There may be more patents with "US..." or "EP..."
I think, Pratt+Whitney is a "big player" in the aero market + their
engagement is no fake / joke ...
With kindest regards
Franky / Frank Herfert
Frankie,
Certainly doesn't look like a joke to me. They seem pretty serious about
it. This is what many of us have been talking about, using the rotary in
a high speed application. They are set up with forced air cooling for
ground operation and I would suggest a clutched engagement to lessen
drag once at altitude. Very interesting article/patent.

What is really significant is all the R&D P&W Canada is doing on the rotary.
Apparently they agree with me that the rotary is a viable replacement
for the PT6.
Half the weight, 1/3rd the cost and less fuel burn in the bargain. They
are trying to build
what is known as a patent firewall. Either to protect their rotary
product if and when it appears
or to prevent a competitor (Possibly GE that now owns the czech copy of
the PT6) from
introducing a rotary.
You notice nobody (other than us) in the aviation press is talking about
all the patents P&W Canada are
obtaining on Wankel improvements.
As I said before the Wankel engine is now the aviation engine of choice.
Even Rolls Royce is obtaining
patents on Wankel engines in turbo fans.
