NOT A P-PORT ?
Steve Carlisle
Ever since the early eighties the P-port has been the best racing engine
version of the rotary. They so dominated car racing that the racing
organizations out lawed it where ever possible. The French out lawed it
in effect after Mazda won Le Mans outright in 1991. The sports car club
of America in the US disallows it in most classes. The Star Mazda series
did not allow it as that open wheel class would have held and set lap
records
close to the F1 lap records if the P-port had been allowed. They would also
have been more more difficult to drive fast.
Mazda won more 24 hours races than any other brand. Mostly the
Daytona Beach 24 hour using P-ports.
The intake system on any engine is an aerodynamic problem. Not only for
power
but BSFC as well. The side ports are a major factor as is the poppet
valve and the
reed valve. Also the Monosoupape valve in WW I radial rotaries. The
airflow in the intake system
can be .4 mach or higher. The lower the drag in the intake system the more
the power and the better the BSFC. Just common sense. It takes HP to
suck air.
