I know this is a month late: lost phone service for a month. Regarding
electrical noise; created from flowing electrons. Sensor wiring has
sheilding in it, whether a woven cover or foil wrap or a wire running
along the cabling. The shield should only be connected at one end. That
should be the instrument end. If connected on both ends the current in
the sensor wires can have a current induced from current flowing through
the shield.
While working at a plant in Fort McMurray I can across two examples. One
was twmp sensors giving erractic reading for the gearbox on a large
crusher. The sensor wires had a woven shield similar to coax cabling
that the installing electrician had not cut of at the sensor end but
bent back. It was grounding on the conduit fitting to the sensor head. A
couple of the sensors were inaccessible in operation so for a temporary
fix I disconnected the shield at a junction box until the crusher was
down for another repair. Had to go through lockout procedures.
The other situation was another electrician had pulled Belden wiring
through a conduit with the wires for a 400HP motor giving erratic
readings which turned out to be 60Hz.
Both examples are kind of extreme cases but sensor wires run by an
alternator would also be affected.
