TCRD=Transfer Case Reduction Drive

We finally managed to disassemble the np241J, 52853-400AC, 09-06-07-J1, 2.72 transfer case which at weigh-in time weighed 80 pounds and when reduced to usable parts weighed 25# less the case, prop hub, and outer gear reduction ring.

Primary initial hope for the all up weight is 40# which appears to be within striking distance.

At the present time we will use the automatic transmission bell housing as mounted on an Rx8 engine which benefits from a very light weight of magnesium, a standard starter which mounts such as the advantage of shifting the C/G positively in both a pusher or tractor configuration, and reduces liability when the TCRD Kit is sold in parts and personally certified by the builder as airworthy.

We will use a 4:1 gear set sold separately, but have been unable to confirm that the driveshaft splines will fit one of the 4:1 input gear with 5/6 pinion gears.

If anyone has knowledge, or where to get the information of a combination please give us a shout.

Please excuse me, as there has been talk about the TCRD in the past year, we have access to cheap 3.10 to 1 gear sets, from GM and Ford, so I am not  following here !. Where is the 4 to 1 gear set in this case? I think most of these parts are acquired as is, and without other parts used to make a complete PSRU, assembled, where does liability come into play ?

Steve Carlisle

There is no connection between GM & Ford gear sets.

We are using parts of a Jeep np 241J transfer case and if you can use a 2:72 ratio all of the parts for a drive are in that transfer case, nothing else except a case, and prop hub to be machined.

The 2.72 ratio in the NP241 drive is described by part number 670 and 582 and if I could use a 2.72 ratio all that needs to be done is to use the input main shaft 678 with 670 and 582.

Last year Paul wanted a 4:10 ratio drive in a single chamber, 125hp engine so to accomplish that we have to replace 670 and 582.

The question at issue for the available 4:10 drives is the new input gear (670) broached to fit the aft end of the main shaft 678 to make this possible?

The caveat, "where does liability come into play?" was added as an after-thought for anyone contemplating commercial production of a complete drive not to do so.

Pedal the drive in a parts kit (two machined parts case and prop
hub) the rest of the pieces can be done with a drill press.

Saves time and money, reduces inventory, and  reduces law suites.

Thanks  for the explanation,

Steve Carlisle

A look ahead. 502

An additional five pounds. 500 Now 30 pounds total. Reduction end of drive.

What do those sand casting weigh Milo?

Paul Lamar

Hi Milo, what does 500 and 502 represent ?

Thanks Steve Carlisle

Steve, Picture number, 500/502.
