Paul,  My fuel tech ECU is asking to confirm the timing.  Just where are
the timing marks on a renesis and is this done with the lead spark on
number 1 rotor?

Take the lower plug out front rotor (car) and put a screw driver in the hole and
feel for top dead center. Better yet crack the porcelain on  an
old plug and weld in a hose nipple. Put the front rotor (at what
you think is TDC with the screw driver and fill a transparent
hose with oil. Then rock the e-shaft back and fourth until the
oil reaches a peak. That is now real TDC.

Now look at the notched wheel on the front of the RX8 e-shaft.

What looks like what should be TDC may not be. For software
reasons that may tell the computer to  start many degrees
before TDC. The computer needs time to calculate all the
things that need to be done at TDC.

I don't know when Mazda fires the injectors relative to TDC
but you can find out with an O-scope.

IMHO at high RPM it matters not as a p-port never closes.
What does not go in the first chamber will go in the following
chamber. The rotary is closer to a continuous combustion jet
engine than it is to a 4 stroke intermittent combustion piston
engine.


You can also start injecting right after the apex seal passes the upper part
of the p-port hole. That is the start of the next chamber that needs fuel.

I just recalled I had this book given to me by Mazda called Mazda RX8 2004 service
highlights. The memory is not what it once was :-)
Wonder of wonders it had the info you are looking for. Very unusual for a car
company to provide this type of info.
