Last weekend I read Lewis Bjork’s article in Kitplanes, and his comments on Mazda engine orientation especially caught my eye.

   What Lewis ran into, if you haven’t read the article, is the fact that his single-rotor 13B stuck up above the deck a few inches if he mounted it up high enough to clear the prop.  He ended up raising the cowling and upper deck height a few inches to accommodate it. With a small boxer air-cooled engine, prop clearance isn’t a problem because the engine is oriented sideways.

   So here’s my question: what show stoppers are there to mounting a 13B sideways?

   It is not any lower as the plugs stick up.
   Also there are rotor cooling oil drain back problems.

You could use a smaller diameter 3 or 4 blade prop or one with a wider chord.
