Hello Paul,

here's the patent by Nitto related to the side housing plates + a
translation by Google. Numbers are different, but it's the same patent.

I've added 3 screen shots from a japanese video by Mazda. I think, it's
produced in 2004.

Around 50% of the film deals with "how to start the engine".
Normal start: do not push the throttle
If the engine is flooded: full throttle - injection is shut off. Do not try
to start with half throttle - injection is working.
You can see it in the figures
 - full throttle: intake stroke is "empty"
 - half throttle: all chambers are "filled"

A recommandation I've found, by a / the RX-7 Club of Amercia:
if the engine is cold, eg after driving out of the garage, let the engine
run with 3000 rpm, turn the key completely to the left (all systems off) +
at the same time push the throttle to WOT / full throttle.
Release the pedal not until the engine has rearly stopped.
Shall avoid flooding ...
