I found a old book called "Visions of a
Flying Machine" by
Peter L. Jakab. Published by the
Smithsonian. 1990
ISBN 0-87474-456-3
It is about the Wright brothers thinking
as they developed their
flying machine.
Several books about the Wrights mention
the problem of a movement
in the center of pressure on a wing as it
changed angle of attack.
This book discusses that in detail.
It occurred to me that perhaps the same
thing was going on in
the Wankel combustion chamber. The
implication of that is it affects th
torque
and efficiency.
Piston engine analysis assumes the center
of pressure is at
the center of the piston. Unlike the
Wankel the piston engine has no
lateral
blast of air. A wing is subject to the
same blast. I suspect the squish
flow is
affecting the movement of the center of
pressure in the combustion chamber.
I don't recall ever reading that in
technical papers about the Wankel.
I suspect it has been assumed the center
of pressure is located at the
center
of the rotor face.
The University of Vienna paper on the
Wankel is using CFD is the best so
far.
I suspect improvements in CFD could
quantify and determine the dynamic
center of pressure to recalculate the
torque as a function of engine
rotation.
Then
the idea is fix it.

Maybe I
have this wrong but I was under the impression that
the high speed air during the compression and
ignition period was in relation to the stationary
housing and spark plugs where as the rotor is
generally moving with the air stream. the primary
air movement relative to the rotor would be from
vortexes generated by the changing geometry of the
intake port as the rotor opens and closes it.

The air is flowing faster than the rotor face is
moving.
Particularly at low RPM and small throttle openings
where the BSFC is worst.
