My hangar neighbor told me about this. Some guy put some bar magnets
on the outside of a steel can oil filter. It generated some black
powder on the inside. Apparently they were very small metallic
particles.

Aircraft Spruce is selling a device that works the same way for $80.

Just get some cheap bar magnets and duct tape them to the outside of
the filter.

Back when I was a motorcycle mechanic and amateur racer, we put
magnets in the oil pan plug or, if it were possible, we used a
magnetized oil pan plug.

We started doing this kind of thing with our cars and it is
amazing how much ferric metal a magnet will collect in an engine
in 3000 miles (back when you changed oil every 3000).

If it is possible, get a magnetized oil pan plug.

Because aircraft can fly inverted, or suffer from negative Gs, a
magnet in the oil pan plug may be a recipe for disaster.

Or, tape the magnets to the oil pan, as that oil is not flowing
as fast as it does through the filter.

Just a suggestion.

It might not work due to the thickness of the oil pan.
Yes I remember those magnetic oil drain plugs.
The filter trick might work better as all the oil goes
through there. Most airplane don't fly upside down.
Only the ones that do aerobatics.
