As WW2 ground to a halt and the jet age began it appears to me that the turbo compound was done with the wrong engine. As Paul has frequently pointed out the big weakness was the exhaust valve
The Brits had some magnificent sleeve valve engines such as the Bristol Hercules, no exhaust valve and so no chewed up turbines from exhaust valve failures.
Have I got it all wrong!

No they made some sleeve valve turbo compound engines.

What Curtiss Wright did not do was apply turbo compound to the Wankel
They were experts in both fields.
