Official TIME TO CLIMB FAI world record! 1'40"!

Hi Paul, Once again a superb job. I seem to have lost the email
about the size of the heat exchanger  for the water cooling, Do you
have the cubic inches per HP that is required?

     Andrew Campbell. NZ

We used to think it was 600 cubic inches for about 250 HP  but
recent experience maybe 500 is more like. A lot depends on how it is
installed. A good wedge diffuser is essential.  Do you have my book?

     Paul Lamar

Yes I did have your book but I lent it to John Shuttleworth who is no
longer with us,  I do have the emails and photos of the diffuser
that were posted here. Thanks that gives me a good Idea on the size
     required for my 130 HP.

Do you have any data on the grade of steel for the prop Shaft?
      Andrew Campbell. NZ

No not for sure. It was built seventy years ago. Probably 4130.
It is way over kill for the TTC as it was the main shaft for a helicopter.
4130 has been around since the 1930's.

For the 2 rotor.... 2 inch  dia, 3/16 wall 4130 tube is about right.

Hey Paul,
I am so proud and happy for you guys.  Fantastic job crushing the record.  Only 8
seconds shy of Rare Bear too.  That record was retired due to 'changes in the
sporting code.'   Do you happen to know what those changes to the code were?  Any
plans to go for more records or maybe even to shave off that last 8 seconds?  6000 m
seems like not too far of a leap if the oil will not get too hot. That one is
currently held by Will Whitsides and Steadfast, whom you easily beat to 3000m.

Now that you (all) have set (no, crushed) the record it should be easy to get some
good sponsorship for further attempts!!!!  What are the plans for the plane at this
point?  You once also mentioned making a Reno Racer out of the engine package.  Any
thoughts along those lines?

Any word from Mazda?  They HAVE to be at least very proud too, even if they cant
admit it.

Dave Leonard

I don't know Dave why they disallowed the Rare Bear record.
With a new prop I think we could have bested that too.

I am so sorry you never got to fly this Dave. Dan was so afraid of it I suspect many
test flights were just to reassure him that is would work.

We are going to try to get it in the EAA museum.

Here is the start of my talk at Aero.
