This may give us a greater ratio than 3 to 1.
Probably around 4 to one. That means we can run the engine up to 11,000 RPM.

Very little additional weight for the gear box.

Requires 2 locked  ring gears to the housing.

It is in  a BMW 323i  2000 up
Transmission part number  5L40-E rear planet.

Also BMW 325  2000 up.

Also BMW 328  2000 to 2007.

BMW 330 1999 up.

BMW 528 2000 up

   What is the purpose of those stepped, straight cut / helical planet gears.

The small planet pinion gears drive the big planet pinion gears.
That is how they get a greater reduction.

BTW it is also used in a Cadilac
