Hi Paul Just read your article about the rotary engined aircraft in
SAAA Airsport. Your comment “automotive piston engines are not
designed for aircraft power levels and should not be used” is
garbage. Have you not read how chev V8’s are tested. It is to a much
higher standard than any lycoming or continental. We have an RV6 with
a V8 out of a car in it and have had so far 520 hours trouble free
flight.

What is the displacement?
What does the cooling system weigh?
What does the gear box weigh and who made it?
What RPM do you fly it at?
What is the max HP rating?
What is the max weight of the aircraft it is in?
A steam engine will fly :-)
Yes a V8 will fly for awhile if you run it at a low enough power level.
Yes they will run for 200,000 miles in a car at a typical 50 HP level.
An aircraft engine runs at duty cycle level typical of an over the
road diesel truck engine weighing up to 2000 pounds.
Obviously your not an engineer :-)
Did you learn any physics in your Oz high school? :-)
Nor have you studied the history of the aircraft.
Samuel Pierpont Langley chose a Stephen M. Balzerr rotary radial piston
engine for high power to weight ratio while the Wright brothers designed
and built their own high power to weight ratio engine. First piston engine
with an aluminum crank case. The rotary radial piston engine went on
to dominate WW I.
This Kitplanes TTC record article illustrates the high power
to weight ratio advantage of the Wankel. The record will not be bettered
except with another Wankel or this one running at a higher boost with a
better prop.
