Good afternoon,

I am building a Velocity XL kit. I am starting to think about the power-plant. I would like to use a rotary engine. Adapting a Wankel, seems even more daunting than assembling the kits itself.

Do you have any suggestions on how to get started? I have no experience with engines other than changing the oil on my car on occasion. With something as important as this, would it be a good idea to use a more conventional lyconosaur or similar?

They are not that hard to work on. They are much simpler than a piston engine.
I suggest you buy one from a junk yard and take it apart.  You must have a box with
a lot of compartments.  One compartment  about 8 inches long for each seal.
There are nine seals for each rotor. 3 apex seals and 3 side seals. Each seal has one or two springs
that go in the associated seal compartment. 18 compartments for both rotors. For the first
time this box is the most time consuming. Once the box is made it can be used again
and again.

There are no valves, valve springs or camshafts to worry about and repair.
The exhaust valve in a piston aircraft engine are the weak link. They must be
checked once a year for leaking. If they are leaking they will eventually fail
by over heating with disastrous results. The valve head could fall off and jam the piston.

Once you dissemble a Wankel rotary once it can be completely dissembled
in a half hour or less.

The engine is very simple to overhaul.

It is far more robust than any piston engine and will tolerate turbo charging
to 650 HP. If you tried that with an aircraft piston engine it would be a instant  bomb.

They are sold in Europe with no TBO. They tend to last forever with silicon
nitride apex seals. You do need a good filter to keep the dirt out
