I had the OBD II on the Honda and I saw a lot of situations where it went
way lean. The cal gov only cares about the arbitrary driving cycle and
they don't peer over the shoulders of the company EFI programmers.
From a software point of view it is easy to detect the silly driving
cycle.
The nox v BSFC situation was discussed in Bruce Briggs book War against
the Automobile.

What is not real world about turbo compound. CW made thousands
of R3350 TCs. A Super Connie could stay aloft for 24 hours.
Actually the exhaust valve was the Achilles heel. The head would
come off and take out the turbine. Rotary no problem no exhaust
valves.

This is an old message. I told the news letter it was possible to detect the
calfornia smog test and modify the mixtrure controled by an EFI to reduce NOX at the
expense of higher fuel burn.
Csaba Csere editor of Car & Driver poo pood the idea as not possible.
Then a year later, or so, VW got caught doing it.
Now there is a netflix video about it called "Dirty Money".

I believe the VW emission scandal was about their diesel engines, at least here in
Europe.
If I remember correctly, they enriched the mixture and delayed the injection timing
to lower the combustion temperatures and the consequent NOx emissions during testing.
Furthermore, they increased the amount of ureum injected in cars equipped with
exhaust after treatment.
One other way they cheated that I personally know of was by only regenerating the
soot filter when the fuel tank was more then half full.
I believe this was done to lower the fuel consumption figures during fuel consumption
testing, presumably because the testing facilities fill every car with the same exact
amount of fuel (less than a half tank) before the test and then measure the remaining
fuel after the test.
I don't know what Honda you drive. But some of the older ones (pre 2000 I believe)
used a lean burn strategy at light loads and low rpm by injecting a stoichiometric
mixture into a pre-chamber. The newer ones use stratified-charge in combination with
a "lean-burn NOx" catalytic converter.

Yes it was but the same relationship apply to gasoline engines. The leaner the
mixture the higher
the NOX. I suspect euro does not put restrictions on NOX as many euro cars get much
better
MPG than cars in. Basically the leaner the mixture the higher the NOX and the lower
the BSFC AKA fuel burn.
The netflix movie was shit as none of that was discussed. They did not identify the
EFI programmer that
had the bright idea of detecting the California driving test and temporarily
richening the mixture to make
the NOX out put low.
As far as I can find it there is no research on the medical affect of nox alone on
human health.
The main problem with smog is unburned hydro carbons HC and not NOX. Unburned
hydrocarbons
were not mentioned in the movie. A bunch of liberal morons made the poorly done
movie I suspect.
